Russert's No Match for Arianna

Arianna Huffington responds to Russert's whining: "NBC News PR Department Gets Down and Dirty..."

And on the Today Show Russert shows his true colors yet again: "This morning the Today Show made a feeble attempt at removing the egg from their face. Tim Russert came on to analyze yesterday's news events and was asked about Couric's interview with Dean and the topic of Abramoff monies going to both parties ... When Lauer asked Russert if indeed the scandal was biparatisan, Russert said yes without flinching." More at C&L.

Oldie but goodie from MWO via Roger Ailes:

"Reliable sources have informed MWO that Jack Welch and Tim Russert attended last autumn's Al Smith Dinner in New York together - and that Russert, on the back of his lapel, was cleverly wearing a Bush for President button.

Russert has reportedly tried to shrug off the incident in private, but has failed to discuss it publicly.

MWO has also been told that either during or after the campaign, Republican Welch chewed out his employee, NBC News correspondent Claire Shipman, for being too favorable to Gore in her reporting on the Vice President's campaign. And Shipman's bureau chief - Tim Russert - reportedly did not lift a finger to protect her or to protest Welch's outrageous partisan interference."

Tim Russert is the Washington DC Bureau Chief for NBC News Division.

This entire division has been corrupted by the CIA Agent prosecution and closeness to the Bush Administration:

- Russert was called by Scooter Libby to complain about Hardball.
- Chris Matthews was pressured by that Scooter Libby call. Chris Matthews was also called by Karl Rove and told Valerie Plame is "fair game."
- Andrea Mitchell has made many mistatements about the Scooter Libby and Valerie Plame situation, on Imus, on Hardball, and on NBC Nightly.

- Pete Williams, former employee of Dick Cheney at DoD, is allowed to report on Dick Cheney the VP.
- Brian Williams (no relation) has admitted his affinity for listening to Rush Limbaugh as an arbiter of public opinion.

Karl Rove played all of them for chumps. He played on their natural tendency to suck up, then zinged them with the Plame leak.

By those two facts, the entire DC Bureau of NBC News has been compromised - if not corrupted - by their unethical behavior and their inordinate symapthy with the Bush Administration.

NBC News used to be represented by the likes of John Chancellor, David Brinkley, and Tom Brokaw. None of them would have been dragged into this mess when they were at NBC. NBC News needs to clean house. Now.

RUSSERT ON TODAY SHOW: "No, they will say it is a primarily a Republican scandal because the personal money of Abramoff went only to Republicans. But Matt, the issue is broad and wide. Democrats also understand that they acccept trips from lobbyists and meals and so forth, and that’s why in order to reform all this, it has to be a bipartisan approach. But Democrats GET RAGING MAD when you suggest this is a bipartisan scandal. They’ll say it’s primarily Republican, but we’re willing to help clean it up."

Of course we get infuriated. Because even a simpleton should be able to distinguish the difference between the Republican Abramoff scandal, and general bipartisan ethical issues.

I was completely dissatisfied with Today's "cleaning up" of Couric factually wrong statements on Thursday, including Russert's weasly commentary.

Here's the letter I wrote Today...

Dear Matt Lauer:

This morning, you said that Howard Dean was "technically" correct in asserting that Abramoff had not given any money at all to democrats. You then distorted the issue by conflating Abramoff with "Abramoff associates" to show that together they HAD contributed to democrats and therefore, in effect, justify Katie's earlier factual error.

In fact those groups you called Abramoff "associates" were Indian tribes who, on their own, decided to contribute to democrats in furtherence of their own legtimate interests, HAVING NOTHING TO DO WITH ABRAMOFF.

So, in effect, you and Today are STILL WRONG and still need to correct the record on this issue.

A good way to do that would be to show, if you can, how exactly these "Abramoff Associates" contributions were linked to Abramoff. If you can't do that, you should broadcast another correction and an apology to Howard Dean and other democrats, like me, who know without a doubt, and not just "technically" that this is a REPUBLICAN SCANDAL.

nbc news should not so quickly dismiss the complaints of the online world. we are your most conscientious and committed audience (the most sought by your advitisers as well) and it would serve you well to internalize our complaints as we speak the truth.

Couric and Lauer are nothing more than leaves in the breeze. If their research told them that bashiing conservatives would help their ratings, they would.

If grotesque aliens came down to dominate our earth, C & L would shrug and say, "What else are we going to do? We gotta make a living," as they reported on the forced transport of humans to the aliens' dinner table.

Maybe they would present a human interest story to brighten our day as we await our turn.

Oh, yeah, that goes for Russert, too.

I can't bear to watch Russert anymore. His show used to be my favorite. But he and his pal Mathews have decided that the pay check for getting on their knees is worth more to them than their integrity.

It's just unbelievable that Russert would even stoop to pushing a gig his son has on his national TV news show.

And then to push the obviously false story on Arianna as a means of avoiding answering questions about his behavior...

Unbelievable. NBC News has been corrupted through and through.

Time to boycott the lot of them.

This man is not just unethical; he is also very small-minded.

And, oh yes, perhaps you would be kind enought to inquire of the Republicans you have on your show about their reaction to Ann Coulter's threatening a sitting justice of SCOTUS? Maybe you could even bring it up at your next ethics in journalism display of hypocrisy? You should have Howard Dean on again, I'm sure he'll have some appropriate answers for your inane lines of questioning.

A new and extensive analysis of campaign donations from all of Jack Abramoff’s tribal clients, done by a nonpartisan research firm, shows that a great majority of contributions made by those clients went to Republicans. The analysis undercuts the claim that Abramoff directed sums to Democrats at anywhere near the same rate.

The analysis, which was commissioned by The American Prospect and completed on Jan. 25, was done by Dwight L. Morris and Associates, a for-profit firm specializing in campaign finance that has done research for many media outlets

At this point you can't tell whether the information from Russert, at least in his own mind, is a professionally fair and balanced report, or a defensive response (technically speaking Dean is right? either he is right or not, there is nothing technical about this) to bolster credibility eroded by errors in reporting in a style that used to get by before people started paying attention - and demanding more accuracy and professionalism in journalistic reporting. What I want to know from Russert is not his conclusions on whether the Democrats, in his view, have an Abramoff problem. Referring to the statement he elicited on his program that
"technically speaking, Howard Dean may be correct. But here's what we found. That 66 percent of the money in this situation went to Republicans, but 34 percent of the money -- not from Abramoff, but from his associates and clients -- went to Democrats"
1. Identify who are Abramoff's associates in this analysis.
2. Who are Abramoff's clients in the analysis.
3. Which Democrats were given the money.
4. Were the donations differenct in kind or amount from donotions made by those associates and clients to the Democrats before Abramoff came on the scene,
5. What quid pro quo did the Democrats identified give to the associates and clients.
Give me this information, Russert and the rest of the MSM, and I will make up my own mind about whether the Democrats have an Abramoff problem. Don't give me your conclusions; they have no value until Russert and the MSM gang learn to tighten up their reporting standards; give us the straight poop, and stop being so defensive about it.
And one more thing the MSM is missing is a proper definition of what the Abramoff problem is. It is not just lobbyist donations, it is not just demanding and enforcing rules that lobbyists give only to Republicans and not to Democrats, it is not just getting Republican personnel in lobbyist offices and staffing offices, it is not just setting a radical right Republican agenda that makes only the narrowest concessions necessary to legislators to get the smallest number of votes necessary to pass the radical agenda (at the enormous expense to the taxpayer in the form of pork and earmarks paid to legislators to buy their votes), it is all of this together and more that will be coming out in the future. An entire culture of corruption of the traditional democratic process that is unconcerned about dividing Americans, and limiting opportunities to have voices heard and a government that acts in the interests of the majority of its citizens and not just those who can afford to juice the system to make it work for them.
In short, the MSM is trying to narrowly define the problem in a way that makes it easier for them to present it to the American people as a bipartisan problem.

Here's some classic Russert from 2000:

RUSSERT: One out of every three kids born in this country, born to a single mom.

BUSH: Yeah.

RUSSERT: Millions of them teen-age moms. Let me show you what Naomi Wolf, an advisor to Vice President Gore, has to say about this issue and put it on the screen: “We should address the teen abortion and unwanted pregnancy rate by doing what Dr. Elders lost her job as surgeon general simply for mentioning: we should teach petting—‘sexual gradualism’—and let our kids know that there are many ways of having pleasure and intimacy that don’t involve intercourse. This is an agenda both the Left and the center can agree on, for it’s hardly a radical notion. Mutual masturbation: history shows it’s the old-fashioned, Main Street, American way. If we teach kids about other kinds of sexual exploration that help them wait for intercourse until they are really ready, we let girls find out about their desire, give them back power in erotic negotiation, and let kids have an option not to go immediately ‘from zero to sixty.’ Teaching sexual gradualism is as sensible as teaching kids to drive.”
(via Daily Howler)

Hard hitting stuff Father Tim. I didn't know Naomi Wolf was on the ballot. I'm sure you'll be asking President Cheney about Scooter Libby's novel where a ten year old girl has sex with a bear in a cage.

The Abramoff scandal is 100% a Republican matter. Russert's mistatement on this matter stems from either an amazing degree of ignorance on the part of an "elite" journalist, or plain old fashioned dishonesty.
